The Pregnant and Pediatric Patient

Pregnancy is a time of great excitement and change for both mother and father. Preparations are made, names are picked, and rooms are decorated for that fast approaching day when the miracle is born. Having been by his wife's side for the births of his two, and soon to be three children, Dr. Gauruder knows how truly important it is to have a healthy pregnancy and birth, but most important of all a healthy baby.

All to often in today's world, pregnancy is treated like a disease or medical procedure. We sometimes forget that this is a natural process not one that requires medical intervention to be successful. That process is evident by the fact that one in every four births ends in a cesarean-section, and the United States ranking 26th in the world among industrialized nations for infant mortality! The birth of a child is a wonderful experience that begins and ends because of the body's amazing innate intelligence.

Chiropractic and Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a mother's body goes through many changes. These include a protruding abdomen which increases spinal curves, "softening" of the ligaments due to the hormone relaxin, postural adaptations, and pelvic changes. These changes can lead to back, neck, joint pain, increased stress on the mother's nervous system, and organ systems. Increased spinal curves effect not only posture but may add stress to the mother's nervous system. The nervous system is vital for the proper function of the mother's organs that support the growth of her baby. Softening of the ligaments can also add to these increased spinal curves; however, the hormone relaxin allows for the preparation of the mother's pelvis for the birthing process. The uterus is housed and is supported by the pelvis. Proper alignment of the pelvis is crucial for having a balanced uterus; one that is free of constraint which allows for proper function during the pregnancy.

We implore the Webster Technique developed by Dr. Larry Webster. This technique relieves the imbalance of tension that can occur among the ligaments that support the uterus. This imbalance can cause intrauterine constraint on the uterus, which can increase the risk of a breeched, and/or prolonged birth. This constraint can also adversely effect the baby's developing cranium and spine. By relieving this constraint it allows the baby to move freely into the proper position for delivery. Adding to this specific technique, Dr. Gauruder, uses Sacral-Occipital Technique (SOT) to restore and maintain pelvic alignment and stability. This prepares and aids the pelvis for the separation required in the birthing process.
